Yoshimidera is famous for an ancient pine tree known as Yuryu-matsu that grows in the grounds of this temple. This venerable tree was planted some 400 years ago. While it is just over 2 meters high today supported branches extend 20 meters each in opposite directions.


Details
Yoshiminedera is an old temple in the western mountains founded in 1029 affiliated with the Tendai sect. There is an ancient pine tree known as Yuryu-matsu that grows in the grounds of this temple. This venerable tree was planted some 400 years ago. In 1932 it was registered as a Natural Monument. Although once much larger the tree has been pruned several times due to infestation by insects. While it is just over 2 meters high today supported branches extend 20 meters each in opposite directions. The tree is said to resemble a dragon.
