Details
Matsuo Taisha was founded in 701 as the family shrine for the hata Clan. The annual festival on the first Sunday after April 20 has a history of 1000 years. Six portable shrines are taken to the west bank of the Katsura River near the Katsura Imperial Villa. From there they are ferried to the east bank passing underneath Katsura Ohashi (bridge). The bridge and riverbanks are crowded with spectators. Matsuo Taisha enshrines the sake god, or the power to procure good sake. Still today many people, particularly sake producers, come here to pay their respects. The water from Kame-i supposedly ensures long life and assists with making sake.
