Highlight
This temple houses the grave stones of over 8000 priests who are still unidentified in a great fire in the 16th century. A momorial ceremony is held every year where hundreds of lanterns are and set afloat down the river.
Details
The preist Kobo Daishi built this curious temple atop a hill overlooking Kyoto where the bodies of the poor and destitute without next of kin were abandoned. Enshrined on the grounds are eight thousand stone Buddhas which serve as gravestones for the nameless people who died in the Adashino area from the Heian to Edo periods. The souls of the abandoned are remembered each year On August 23rd and 24th when candles are lit in the Sento Kuyo ceremony. If you get a chance, the candle ceremony is a must see event. Close to the temple is a lovely bamboo forest path that is worth a stroll.
