Ryoanji is also known as the Temple of the Peaceful Dragon Zen, and is home to possibly the most famous Japanese rock garden. The garden is highly influenced by the ideals of the tea ceremony that flourished in the Muromachi era (1338-1573) The best time to enjoy the serene atmosphere is in the early morning before the large number of crowds arrive.

Called, theTemple of the Peaceful Dragon Zen, is a Zen temple which is home to possibly the most famous Japanese rock garden. Dating from the late 10th century, it was originally a villa of the Tokudaiji family. It was taken over by Hosokawa ), a military commander of the Muromachi Era (1336 - 1573) in 1450 and turned into a Zen temple. Destroyed in the Onin war that devastated most of Kyoto. Reconstruction took place during 1488-1499 and it is generally thought that rock garden was built soon thereafter.
