One of Kyoto's many interesting and often overlooked gems is Nijo Jinya. . Constructed in the mid 17th century by a wealthy merchant named Yorozura Hiraemon as an inn for the feudal lords (daimyo) who were visiting the capital. it is a real life "mystery house" complete with secret pathways and staircases, consealed trapdoors, and hidden storage places designed to protect its guests. One would never suspect that an inn of this quality could have so many extraordinary surprises! Several tours are held daily and take about one hour. Make Appointments at least one day in advance by phone (075-841-0972). Those who do not speak Japanese are advised to bring an interpreter or guide.
