Nijo - jo Castle、the residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, was constructed in 1603. This castle accommodated the last Shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu who restored the emperor to his ancient seat of power in 1867. The palace building survives in its original form and is famous for its "Momoyama" architecture which consist of beautifully decorated sliding doors and floors that squeak when someone walks on them (a security defense measure against intruders)
