Jissoin is a temple belonging to an independent sect of Buddhism called Tendai, founded by a priest named Joki in 1229. In Often cases the head priest would have blood relation to the emperor. The walk-in type garden of the Momoyama period (1568-1600) style and the rock garden on the eastern side of the guest halls are well worth seeing. The statue of Fudo Myo-o, the buddhist deity of fierce spirit, and the mortuary tablets to emperors and other members of the upper class are housed in the temple.
