Details
Kennin-ji is mostly significant for being the first Zen temple of the Rinzai sect founded in 1202 by the monk Myoan Eisai after his return from studying zen Buddhism in China. Eisai is considered the founder of Zen Buddhism in Japan. Kenin-ji, unlike many other temples in the country, which have been rebuilt after they had been destroyed in fire and war, is still close to its original state when it was built in 1202. The Zen Master Dogen who was the founder of the Japanese Soto sect of Buddhism, also studied and trained at this temple.
