Daigoji was constructed in 1115 as the residence of Daigoji's Archbishop. The garden behind the main hall was built for Toyotomi Hideyoshi`s famous "hanami" (cherry blossom) party in 1598. The 5 storied pagoda is Kyoto's oldest structure which was built in 951.

Daigoji is a temple complex in southeastern Kyoto, Sanboin is a large wooden building constructed in 1115 as the residence of Daigoji's archbishop. It includes a beautiful Japanese garden which was built for Toyotomi Hideyoshi's famous hanami (cherry blossom viewing) party of 1598. In the Shimo-Daigo area of Daigoji stand most temple halls and structures including Kyoto's oldest building, the five storied pagoda dating from 951. Many events are held at the daigoji, such as Cherry Blossom Parade, and the Candle memorial service (shoro nagashi) where over 10,000 lanterns are lit and set afloat the river
