This temple is dedicated to the Jodo sect of Buddhism and has a history of over 1100 years. Eikando is famous for its autumn leaves as the changes colour for the winter. There are many maple trees in the main garden that is best to visit in late November.

Eikando was founded in 863 A.D. during the 9th century by Shinjo (797 – 873), who was a high ranking deciple of Kobo Daishi. It was once completely destroyed during the war of Onin which lasted from 1467 – 1477. A famous priest by the name of Yokan One (1033 – 1111), also known as "Eikan", who stayed at this temple devoted his life to the underprivileged and weak which made Eikando especially well known during that time. Today it is best known for its maple trees and fall foliage--and a magnificent 30 inch high statue known as the Turning Amida.
