* Be sure to know that "mansion" in Japan refers to what we know in the western world as a small apartment or condominium. The main differences between an apartment and mansion in Japan, are the building materials and size. Mansions give the impression that it is newer and cleaner, and has an elevator. Most apartments don't have elevators.

* Machiya are traditional wooden townhouses originating from Kyoto, the old capital of Japan. Usually, you can find Kyoto machiya along the narrow streets in between bigger buildings that face the main streets of the city blocks.
The front of the building serves as some kind of retail or shop space, generally having a sliding door or folding shutters. Deep in the back there is usually one or more small courtyard gardens. Inside the house is mostly constructed with timber and the floors are tatami. (Japanese traditional woven rice straw flooring)
